In 1968 the Smallfilms partnership of Oliver Postgate (animator & narrator) and Peter Firmin (designer) considered a brief from the BBC asking for future series productions to be in colour, and not only that but colourful with it. The first Clangers series of 26×10’ minute episodes were made by Smallfilms for the BBC between 1969 and 1972. In 2014 it was voted the third most popular BBC Children’s TV character of the 60s by Radio Times readers.

Inspired by the original series, brand new stop-motion animation has been created with a £5m budget and distributed by BBC Worldwide. The series launched on Cbeebies in June 2015 and is narrated by Michael Palin.
